Art about extravagance or wasteful hoax?
Photographer Tyler Shields’ newest work involves the documentation of his girlfriend and Clint eastwood’s daughter, francesca eastwood destroying a red crocodile Hermes Birkin bag…with a chainsaw and lighter fluid.
If you dont know about Hermes, Birkin bags are probably the most exclusive product ever, demanding a waiting list and prices up to $100,000!
While the debate on whether or not the bag was real continues, so does the buzz.
The initial reaction from many was anger, and disgust and even a few death threats!
Tyler Shields has offered to donate $100,000 (£62,500) to a family in need after sparking controversy by snapping girlfriend and muse Francesca Eastwood setting fire to a Hermes Birkin bag.-link
Not only are the photos attractive and sexy, dangerous and already going viral, the concept behind the work makes us chuckle in a good way. Obviously questioning the roles of consumers and prodding at the notion of paying 1hundred grand for a purse, and what makes 1 hundred grand worth it? it’s a bit damien hirst but we like the spirit of it. You must understand artists spend money on their work anyway and it obviously is gaining him international recognition.
if the bag is not real the merit of the photos is EVEN GREATER for causing such a stir and inducing death threats over a ploy. well done tyler sheilds
other work by tyler includes destroying a famed pair of red soled louboutin stilettos and some adorable emma roberts vs barbie doll photos, deborah ann woll, evan peters and more @ TYLER SHIELDS.com
what do you all think? art or waste?
